Fixing connectivity issues while using an FTP client

Updated over a week ago

There are different reasons why you may encounter an error when trying to connect to your hosting via FTP. Here are some of the most common errors and how to fix them:

530 Login Incorrect

A 530 error while connecting to your FTP is most likely due to incorrect login credentials. Try double-checking that you are entering your current FTP details.

If you have confirmed that you are using the correct credentials, reset your FTP password and try again - you should be able to connect now 😊

20 seconds or Connection Timed Out Error

In most cases, this error indicates an issue with the internet connection from your provider. Try the following:

  1. Reboot your router and any other network devices you may have

  2. Increase the connection timeout in the FTP client you are using. In FileZilla, this can be done via Edit → Settings:

You will be presented with an options menu where you can change the timeout interval to 9999:

That’s it! Now your FTP should work without any issues.

NOTE

  • If the Time Out error persists after trying both solutions, contact your internet service provider
