Migrating VPS Data: cPanel, Cyberpanel and Direct Admin

Updated over 3 weeks ago

At Hostinger, our Virtual Private Servers (VPS) are self-managed, giving you complete control over your server environment. This means you’ll handle the setup and configuration of your project, including the manual migration process if you're transferring from your current VPS to another server on your Hostinger account.

We have prepared a detailed guide below to support you during the migration. While the steps may differ depending on your operating system and the applications you use, the guide provides general instructions applicable to the most popular control panels.

NOTE:

  • We recommend scheduling your migration during low-traffic periods to make sure that there is no service interruption on your application.

  • During the migration process, also consider and allot 24 hours for DNS propagation.

Step 1 - Prepare and Transfer backups

Most of the popular control panels have built-in tools to help in transferring live data from one panel to another, providing a seamless and automated experience for their users.

Cyberpanel

  1. Backup and Transfer your Data: You can move your backup straight to Google Drive: Backup to Google Drive and upload the backup manually to your new Cyberpanel server.

  2. Restore the Backup: Log in to CyberPanel on the new VPS, go to Main > Backup > Restore Backup, and restore from there.

Tip: Ensure OpenLiteSpeed is configured similarly on the new VPS to avoid compatibility issues. Additionally, if both of your servers with Cyberpanel are active, we encourage you to use its built-in remote transfer tool.

cPanel

  1. Generate a Full Account Backup: In cPanel, navigate to Backup Wizard > Full Backup and download the backup file.

  2. Transfer the Backup to the New VPS: Use an SFTP tool or cPanel’s File Manager to upload the backup file to the new server.

  3. Restore the Backup: Access Backup Wizard on the new VPS and upload the backup file to complete the migration.

Note:

If you’re using WHM, you can migrate multiple accounts directly via the Transfer Tool.

DirectAdmin

  1. Create a Backup in DirectAdmin: Go to Admin Backup/Transfer, select the accounts or files you want to migrate, and generate a backup.

  2. Move the Backup to the New VPS: Use SCP or FTP to transfer the backup to the new VPS.

  3. Restore the Backup on the New Server: In DirectAdmin, navigate to Admin Backup/Transfer on the new VPS and import the backup file.

Note: If you have an existing license for cPanel and DirectAdmin and would like to transfer it to your new VPS, you can contact Hostinger Support.

Step 2 - Post-Migration Checklist

After completing the migration, make sure to:

  1. Update DNS Records: Point your domain(s) to the new server’s IP address.
In Hostinger, your VPS IP address can easily be accessed from your VPS Overview page

  2. Test All Services: Ensure websites, databases, emails, and other services are working correctly.

PRO TIP: You can use Kodee AI assistant for help with commands, troubleshooting, and simple management tasks 🚀

  3. Monitor Performance: Check server logs and resource usage to confirm optimal performance.

In Hostinger, you can access your server’s resource usage directly from VPS Overview > Server Usage:

You can also filter the data by 24 hours, past week, past month, and past year
