Managing your files and folders using the file manager at Hostinger

You can easily manage the files and directories of all your websites using our file manager.

The file manager is not available for websites created with Hostinger Website Builder. Instead, please refer here: Website Builder: Media Library 💡

Go to WebsitesDashboard, search for File Manager on the sidebar, and click on it. You will be presented with two options:

  1. Access files of your domain – the file manager will open from the public_html folder of your current domain. Select this option if you wish to manage the files for this website only. You can also access this location directly from the Hosting Dashboard

  2. Access all files of your web hosting – the file manager will open from the next level down, meaning that you will see the domains folder, as well as other system files or directories. Select this option to manage files across several websites, as well as to see log files if available

Make sure your website files and folders are placed inside the domain's public_html folder. Uploading website files directly to the location opened when using Access all files will cause errors on your website

Once selected, the file manager will open in a new tab where you will find three main sections:

Section 1 – Left menu

Here you will find:

  • My files – shortcut to the file manager’s root folder in one click.

  • New folder – create a new folder in the current directory.

  • New file – create a new file in the current directory.

  • Trash bin – storage of deleted files if you selected not to skip the bin during file deletion.

  • Settings – change some display options, including the language.

  • Logout – close the session in the file manager.

Section 2 – Files managing area

Here, the available files and folders in the current directory will be listed, and you will be able to navigate between them.

Right-clicking on the file or folder opens a context menu with the following features:

  1. Info – shows when a file or directory was last modified and its size. For directories, it will also show the number of inodes it contains.

  2. Edit – opens the file editor to modify the file. This option will only be available for text-based files.

  3. Rename – changes the name of a file or folder.

  4. Copy file – creates a copy of the file or directory in the desired location.

  5. Move file – moves the selected item to the desired location.

  6. Permissionssets access rights for the selected item.

  7. Archive creates an archive containing the selected files or folders with a name and format of choice. Available archive formats are: .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz, .tar.lz4, .tar.sz.

  8. Download – download selected files or folders. The number near the button will show how many separate items are currently selected.

  9. Delete – delete the file or folder. By default, it will skip the trash bin and be permanently deleted right away. If you want to move files to the Trash bin instead, click to remove the selection on the checkbox before deleting:

Section 3 – Top menu

The top menu has some fixed options as well as additional ones available when selecting a file or folder:

Visible after selecting a file or folder:

  1. Rename – rename the selected folder or file.

  2. Copy – copy the selected folder or file.

  3. Move – move the selected folder or file.

  4. Permissions – set or change permissions for the selected folder or file.

  5. Archive – create a single file containing the selected files and/or folders.

  6. Extract – unpack an archive file to a separate folder (you will set its name before proceeding).

  7. Delete – delete a folder or file.

    Always visible:

  8. Switch view – switch the default view from List to Grid and back.

  9. Download – download selected files or folders. The number near the button will show how many separate items are currently selected.

  10. Upload – button to upload files or folders to the current directory. You can also use drag-and-drop for the same result.

  11. Calculate directory size – shows the total size and the number of inodes of folders inside the current directory.

  12. Info – shows when a file or directory was last modified and its size. For directories, it will also show the number of inodes it contains.

  13. Select multiple – press to enable multiple selection, so you can apply some actions on the selected files and folders. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl (or the Command key on Mac) while selecting items.

For security reasons, the file manager session expires after some time. If you get an error after a period of inactivity, close the tab and access it again 💡
