Requirements, renewal and transfer process for .fr domains

Updated today

The .fr domain is the official country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) for France, managed by AFNIC (Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération) primarily used by individuals, businesses, and organizations with a connection to the country.

Registering a .FR domain helps establish a strong digital presence in France, improving local trust and visibility.

Requirements

Registering a .fr domain requires meeting one key requirement: it is only available to residents of the European Union (EU), otherwise the registration will be rejected by AFNIC.

If you're not an EU resident, consider purchasing another TLD in Hostinger Domain Search page 🚀

Whois Privacy Protection

By default, Whois privacy protection is not included with the domain purchase. However, all contact information remains hidden and secure.

To hide your contact details, you can update your domain's contact details to company information:

  1. Login to hPanel.

  2. Go to Domains tab:

  3. Select the domain by clicking Manage:

  4. Navigate to Domain Ownership where you can change the contact details

  5. Click "Change Contact" to change details from Personal to Company.

Once the changes are made, confirmation is required via the email linked to the domain.

Renewal

A .FR domain follows special renewal regulations. It must be renewed at least 25 hours before the expiry date; otherwise it will enter the redemption period. Redeeming the the domain requires an additional fee on top of the renewal cost.

To prevent these interruptions, consider enabling auto-renewal. Additionally you may also renew your domain at any time before it expires.

  3. The domain is active: not suspended by the registry and not in the redemption period

  4. You have a valid EPP/Auth code from your current registrar

  5. Ensure DNSSEC is disabled. You can verify your DNSSEC status using the DNSSEC Checker tool.

Step 2 – Initiate the transfer

To initiate the transfer, follow these steps:

  1. Unlock your domain with your current registrar.

  2. Open the Hostinger Transfer Domain page (or Transfer Domain if you already have a Hostinger account).

  3. Insert your domain name and click on Transfer.

  4. Proceed with the payment.

  5. Enter the EPP code

  6. Choose whether you want to keep your current nameservers or use Hostinger nameservers and initiate the transfer. You will also have the option to keep your current records if you choose Hostinger nameservers.

Typically, a domain transfer takes 5-7 days to complete. However for .fr domain, it can take up to 22 days. After completing your order, the domain transfer process will begin. You'll receive an email about the transfer — be sure to confirm it.
