How and why to purchase VPS hosting?

Main features of VPS self-managed hosting

Updated over 5 months ago

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a type of hosting that virtually replicates a physical server with its own operating system and dedicated resources.

This allows you to control all the server configurations, allowing you to create an environment fully adapted to your needs.

For example, a VPS allows you to edit the php.ini file, which is restricted to managed hosting environments. Unlike in managed hosting, you also get root access to your VPS.

Some other features, technologies, and programming languages that are available only in VPS plans include:

Programming Languages

Java, Python, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, C++, C#, Perl

Derived Libs / Third-Party Systems

Django, Node.js, ZeroMQ PHP, SEER, Tomcat

Database Functions

PostgreSQL, SQL SERVER, SQL Triggers

Integrated Functions / Systems

PHP GD2, FFMPEG, proc_open/proc_close, ini_restore, openlog, syslog, apache_child_terminate, apache_get_version, apache_getenv, apache_note, apache_setenv, Reverse Proxy, register_globals off, mod_xsendfile, asterisk

Keep in mind that VPS plans at Hostinger are self-managed. This means that all settings, such as installing and updating OS and applications, creating a DNS zone, setting up a mail server, installing SSL, and everything else, should be done on your part.

If you think VPS is the best option for you, you can find all the available plans here: VPS Hosting.

If you want to explore other options, consider picking up our managed hosting instead, such as Web and Cloud plans.

How to purchase a VPS hosting plan

New VPS hosting

If you already have a Hostinger account, you can purchase a new VPS from our website or hPanel by following this guide → How to Purchase a Hosting Plan.

Upgrading to VPS

If you're currently using a Web or Cloud hosting plan and find yourself in need of more resources, a greater variety of permissions, or access to VPS-exclusive features, consider moving to a VPS.

It's important to note that automatic upgrades from a Web or Cloud hosting plan to a VPS are not supported due to differences in server architecture. Instead, you can manually migrate your content to a VPS by following these steps:

  1. Purchase a new VPS plan and set it up

  2. Transfer your files and databases, and email them to the VPS

Since VPS is self-managed, only you will be responsible for completing these steps.

For a detailed guide, you can refer to the following tutorial → How to migrate a website from shared hosting to VPS
