Slow upload speeds in the File Manager can be caused by various factors. To resolve these issues, it's helpful to start by addressing the most common causes. This guide will walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps to help improve your upload speed.
Check for Ongoing Server Downtime
Slow uploads may occur if there is scheduled or emergency maintenance on our servers. To check if this is the case, visit our Status Page for updates on any ongoing maintenance. If maintenance is in progress, you can expect upload speeds to return to normal once it's completed.
Check the Stability of Your Internet Connection
An unstable or poor local internet connection can lead to slow upload speeds. To check if this is affecting your connection to our servers, follow this guide: How to Use Traceroute. This will help you determine if there are any connectivity issues between your ISP and our servers.
Use FTP for Faster File Uploads
If you're encountering slow upload speeds, try using an FTP client. FTP offers a more reliable method for transferring files, which can help bypass certain connection issues. Additionally, FTP allows you to download files from the server, providing a versatile solution for file management.
Upload Files Using SSH
For those with Premium, WordPress Starter, or higher hosting plans, SSH access is available. This allows for direct, faster file uploads to the server. Once you have set up your SSH connection, refer to this guide for common SSH commands: Common SSH Commands.
Use a VPN to Improve Connection
If you're still experiencing slow speeds, using a VPN can help by reducing the distance between your device and our servers. Choose a VPN server location closest to your hosting plan’s server and try uploading your files again. To find your hosting plan’s server location, go to Websites → Dashboard, click on Plan Details in the sidebar:
On the right hand side you will see Server Details section where you can check your server location:
Alternatively, you can use a different device to upload the files - sometimes it helps to bypass stubborn local cache on your hardware.
Switch Your Hosting Plan Server Location
As a final option, you can transfer your hosting plan to a server location closer to you. This will move all your websites to a new server, change your server's IP address, and temporarily lock you out of your hPanel for up to 4 hours during the transfer. Note that the server location can only be changed once every 30 days. For more information, follow this guide: How to Transfer Your Hosting Plan to a Different Server.
