Creating, managing, and deleting subdomains at Hostinger

Updated over a week ago

Subdomains are a useful way to organize parts of your website and have neatly constructed links at the same time – for example, your online store can be hosted in the subdomain shop.domain.tld. Subdomains can also act as fully independent websites.

The information given below doesn't apply if the root domain is connected to Hostinger Website Builder. In this case, a subdomain should be created as a DNS record: How to Create a Subdomain if the Root Domain Is Connected to the Builder 💡

How to Create a Subdomain

To create a subdomain, go to the Websites section and click on Manage next to the website in question. Then, search for Subdomains on the left and click on it:

The Subdomains menu option on hPanel sidebar

In the section Create a New Subdomain, enter a name for your new subdomain and select if you want to create a custom folder (directory) for it.

It's usually recommended to keep a default directory for your subdomains 💡

Finally, click on Create:

Once you create the subdomain, you can add it as a website this way: How to Add a Website 💡

NOTE

  • Creating wildcard subdomains is not supported at the moment

How to Point a Subdomain

If your domain is pointed elsewhere by nameservers, you need to point your subdomain to the IP address of your hosting plan so the subdomain works properly. Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the platform to which your domain is pointed via nameservers, access your domain's DNS zone there, and create a new A record:

DNS record type

A

Host

Insert the name of your subdomain; e.g., insert shop for shop.domain.tld

Value

Insert the IP address of your hosting plan

TTL

Leave the default (or choose the smallest available) value

You can check the instructions on how to change the DNS zone for the most popular providers or contact the service's support if you need assistance.

Any changes made to the DNS zone trigger propagation, which may take up to 24 hours 💡

How to Check Existing Subdomains

In your Hostinger account, go to the Websites section and click on Manage next to the website connected to the root domain. Then, search for Subdomains on the left and click on it:

The Subdomains menu option on hPanel sidebar

Scroll down to the List of Current Subdomains. Here, you can see the complete list of subdomains, as well as the directory where the subdomain's files are located:

How to Delete a Subdomain

Deleting a subdomain permanently deletes the website located on this subdomain, along with the associated website files, databases, and emails.

For this reason, it is strongly recommended that you download the file backups and databases as well as backup your email messages before proceeding.

Once all is good to go, press the Delete button in the List of Current Subdomains:
